Chicago Asylum Office Issues New Report On Processing Times

Your Go-To Immigration Resource

On January 24th, 2019, the USCIS Chicago Asylum Office shared statistics about their processing times of asylum applicants from October 1, 2018 through December 31st, 2018 in a joint meeting with the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA).

During this time, 1,197 asylum cases were adjudicated and 116 were un-adjudicated, while over 22,000 applications remain pending. Moreover, only 49 TVPRA cases were completed while 3,223 remain pending.

The Asylum Office reports that they have not instituted any procedural changes due to the new Executive Orders or Headquarter directives, and that no new trends or influxes of asylum cases have been reported. In addition, they have resumed regular scheduling of non-detained credible/reasonable fear interviews. With regards to pending TVPRA cases, which are not considered priorities within the LIFO scheduling program, the Asylum Office claims to process the backlog “as time permits.”
